I would like whiter teeth.  How do I go about achieving a brighter smile?

Tooth whitening is a safe cost-effective way for you to achieve a brighter, younger smile.  The process improves the appearance of your teeth without removing any of their natural surface and can even be carried out in your own home.

It is carried out by using a special carbamide peroxide gel placed inside a tray which fits neatly and comfortably over your teeth.

I am worried about gum disease, what should I know?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibres and supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth.  Left untreated this disease can lead to tooth loss.  The first signs of gum disease are reddened, swollen or bleeding gums caused by the build up of plaque and known as ‘gingivitis’.  This can be easily prevented by good oral hygiene at home and with the assistance of your dental hygienist.

Are you at risk?

Some people are genetically predisposed to gum disease so it’s a good idea to check if either of your parents lost teeth as a result of gum disease.

Smoking can hide the signs of gum disease as well as reduce the positive effects of any treatment. Not to mention all the other harmful effects not related to your gums!

Stress has been shown to reduce resistance to gum disease meaning people can be susceptible at different times in their lives depending on their lifestyle.

However, regardless of your susceptibility, you and your dentist/hygienist can keep gum disease in check with good oral hygiene at home combined with regular check ups and the appropriate treatment where necessary.

If you are still worried, please don’t hesitate to give us a call for further information.

How is smoking bad for my teeth?

It is well known that smoking has many detrimental effects on your health, in some cases leading to fatal diseases.  It is also true that smoking can have a serious effect on the appearance and the health of your teeth and gums.

  • Smoking dramatically increases the risk of mouth cancer.
  • It can increase the likelihood of developing gum problems and prevent effective treatment leading to tooth loss.
  • Smoking causes tooth staining and discolouration.
  • Smoking causes bad breath.

What can you do?  Simply, stop smoking.  We understand this may be very difficult and are happy to give advice on how you can quit the habit as the overall health and well-being of our patients is our main priority.

What can I do to prevent tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of teeth by bacteria resulting in toothache and even tooth loss.  Bacteria feeds off the food you eat, especially sugary food, breaking them down into acids that attack your teeth.  Therefore it is recommended to eat three regular meals a day and avoid sugary snacks in order to limit the number of times your mouth is at risk.  Regular and thorough brushing of your teeth twice daily will hlp prevent the build up of plaque, reducing bacteria as well as your chances of tooth decay.  For advise on how best to brush your teeth, or to book an appointment to see a dentist or dental hygienist.
