What is dental fear?

At Drayton Dental Care, we come across some level of dental anxiety almost every day, so we understand what it is like for patients who are nervous about visiting the dentist. There are many reasons why people feel fear around dental appointments, here are just a few of the most common ones:

  • A painful or traumatic past experience

  • Worried about pain or discomfort

  • Concerns about being ‘told off’ by the dentist or hygienist

  • A dislike of unfamiliar surroundings

  • A parent who had dental fear, causing an inherited anxiety

  • Anxieties around the sounds and smells of a dental practice

Along with the differing reasons for suffering with dental anxiety, there are also varying levels of fear. Some people have an extreme phobia that prevents them from entering the dental practice or even phoning us. Others may not suffer as badly but still feel concerns that make their dental appointments unenjoyable, meaning they will often delay their routine dental care.

At Drayton Dental Care we are committed to helping everyone to overcome their dental fears, so however dental anxiety affects you, we can help. We won’t just get you through the door, we will work closely with you to make your appointments enjoyable – we want you to love attending the dentist!

I’m a nervous person when going to dentist due to past experiences, but feel l am getting better due to the kindness and understanding of my dentist. Everything possible is done to make you comfortable and relaxed.

How we can ease your dental fears

The team at Drayton Dental Care have plenty of methods and techniques that we regularly use with our patients to successfully ease their dental fears. We find that even with the most nervous of patients, all they need is time and kindness. Our appointments are calm, unhurried, welcoming, and you will find our chairside manner is excellent.

If you are anxious about your dental or hygiene appointments, please call us for a chat first. You are welcome to visit us, meet our team and have a look around before going anywhere near a dental chair.

When it comes to treatment, we will break it down into bite-sized chunks that are more manageable and easier to cope with. We also prioritise our first morning and after lunch appointments for nervous patients so that you don’t experience any delays – we know that waiting can increase anxiety, so we’ll do our best to eliminate this.

Every member of the Drayton Dental Care team will make your visit as comfortable as possible, from the moment you arrive. We will explain everything to you at each stage of your dental journey and you will always be able to ask us questions. We want you to feel in control of your dental health and your dental treatment, and we will help you to achieve that.

Dental neglect

Poor dental health is linked to heart disease, bacterial lung infections, premature births, diabetes and strokes, meaning regular visits for dental health reviews are vital to maintaining good general health and dental wellbeing.

Please don’t neglect your dental wellbeing because of dental phobia – speak to us, we can help.

Very friendly staff. Efficient and quick service. Detelina put me at ease right from the start so I no longer have that feeling of dread when I visit the dentist.
