Which food and drink is best for my kids?

April 25, 2018

The food and drinks we give to our children can have a drastic effect on the health of their teeth, explain our Drayton Dentists.

Our Norwich dentists Debbie Paramani and Vasiliki Stamatoukou say that enjoying a wide and balanced diet is important for people of all ages but particularly for children, who should be encouraged to eat healthily from as young as possible. The food they are given at an early age will shape their adult eating patterns.

Swap the sweet stuff for savoury

It is difficult not to love the taste of biscuits, cakes, chocolate, sweets and fruit squashes, but avoid offering them to babies and young children for as long as possible. Instead, give them milk, fruit and vegetables, bread, pasta and cheese, thereby developing more savoury tastes. Milk and water are the only tooth-kind drinks available, so offer them to your children for as long as possible.

A small amount of sugar in foods at mealtimes is ok and of course, steering clear of treats forever would be incredibly difficult. When eating sweets and chocolate do so in one sitting as continual chewing or sucking on sugary things can cause tooth decay even if your child only has one or two teeth.

If you have any concerns about your child’s dental health, speak to one of our team. We are only too happy to help encourage tooth-kind eating and drinking habits that will last a lifetime.
